The village
Buckden is small and very pretty, sitting at the top of Wharfedale,
surrounded by tall hills and with a stunning view up the valley
towards the village of Hubberholme and the hamlet at Cray.
The pub
Buckden has its own village pub, the Buck Inn. It’s large and
serves good food and ales. It also has rooms. Clifford House
Farm is immediately behind the Buck, 30 seconds walk away! To
see a picture of the pub, click here.
The village stores
We also have our own small village shop where you can order
your daily newspapers, buy milk, basic household goods like
washing powder, postcards, that sort of thing. It sits in front
of the village green on the edge of the village. To see a picture,

Local events
Quite a lot happens in the village, from quiz nights to whist
drives to art groups. The best place to find up-to-the-minute
information is to visit village's very own community website
at www.buckden.org
(see the "What's On" (click here)
and "Local Activities" (click
here) sections of that website).

The surroundings
The village of Kettlewell is only a ten minute drive down the
valley (Kettlewell is where they filmed "Calendar Girls") and
Grassington, the lovely old market village, is a further 15
minutes along the road. Skipton, "Gateway to the Dales", is
the large market town closest to us, where you can do your normal
food and general shopping (that said, there is a handy village
stores in Buckden itself, where you can get your basics: paper,
milk and postcards). Fountains Abbey, Jervaulx Abbey, Bolton
Abbey, Ripon Cathedral, Harrogate, Embsay-Bolton Abbey Steam
Railway, Malham Cove, Ribblehead Viaduct, Skipton Castle and
Wensleydale Creamery are all close by.
Buckden itself is a village at the top of Wharfedale, where
the road splits in two. Both branches run over to Wensleydale,
one branch up over the very top via Hubberholme and Yockenthwiate.
The other via Cray and Bishopdale, and past West Burton. Buckden
sits on the River Wharfe and the Dales Way passes through. The
village pub, the Buck Inn, is a large, Georgian coaching inn.
It serves good pub food and the ales they have are excellent.
There are two hamlets a mile or two further up the dale, Hubberholme
with its ancient parish church (J B Priestley's favourite church,
his ashes are held there) and Cray. In Hubberholme you can visit
the George, a pretty whitewashed pub opposite the church and
next to the river. And at Cray you have the marvellously friendly
White Lion. Both pubs serve good pub food in front of open fires,
fabulous settings for a lunchtime pint or an evening meal.
Back down the valley you have the village of Starbotton (the
Fox & Hounds pub is lovely) and then Kettlewell with its large
village stores, tourist shops, three pubs (try the Bluebell)
and gorgeous church. And Grassington is only a few miles further
back down the road, where you can pretty much get all your shopping
done (there's a small supermarket, butcher, baker, that sort
of thing).
The kids will love climbing up Buckden Beck behind the village
and up to the waterfall. They can also splash about at Yokenthwaite
where the river flows gently over the flat "limestone pavement",
forming pools and little cataracts
.
