continued . . . . .

The village of Kettlewell is only a ten minute drive down the valley (Kettlewell is where they filmed "Calendar Girls") and Grassington, the lovely old market village, is a further 15 minutes along the road. Skipton, "Gateway to the Dales", is the large market town closest to us where you can do your normal food and general shopping (that said, there is a handy village stores in Buckden itself, where you can get your basics: paper, milk and postcards). Fountains Abbey, Jervaulx Abbey, Bolton Abbey, Ripon Cathedral, Harrogate, Embsay-Bolton Abbey Steam Railway, Malham Cove, Ribblehead Viaduct, Skipton Castle and Wensleydale Creamery are all close by.

Back down the valley you have the village of Starbotton (the Fox & Hounds pub is lovely) and then Kettlewell with its large village stores, tourist shops, three pubs (try The Bluebell) and gorgeous church. Grassington is only a few miles further back down the road, where you can pretty much get all your shopping done (there's a small supermarket, butcher, baker, etc).

The kids will love climbing up Buckden Beck behind the village and up to the waterfall. They can also splash about at Yokenthwaite where the river flows gently over the flat "limestone pavement", forming pools and little cataracts.
